I believe we can raise the level of consciousness with packaging together with a conversation.
The ask:
- Find something in your kitchen, medicine cabinet, lotions, cosmetics, etc that you think could be more efficently packaged and snap a photo of it
- Post it on social media, with #IsItSm4rt Note: if you want to provide context, feel free to copy the italic text below or create your own
- Optional bonus points: ask a friend to post too
With your permission, I’ll repost on these sites:

#isItSmart (example) for tooth paste to be shaped like it is or is there a way we could have a better toothpaste to packaging ratio? CompanyXYZ, I would continue to buy your product if there was the same amount in a smaller package.
Do you want to join the #IsItSM4RT conversation? Please do simply by posting your own question. You can learn more at IsItSm4rt.com
Asking it as a question allows for a more progressive conversation. Maybe the packaging is the most efficient way for us to get the product we need. Let’s be open to learning. But, if it is more marketing driven than efficient, we can share that we will support our favorite products making a change, discarding the status quo and helping reduce waste. Let’s get smart about packaging!
Some motivations I’ve already heard from friends include:
- Learning more
- Having more of the product you love inside the packaging as opposed being spent on the packaging
- Stating that you think it is the best packaging
- Wanting closer representation of the inside to the outside
All are completely valid and could be explored. Let’s just leave behind blame or shame and begin with a progressive conversation and some open minded questions. Just by asking the question and pausing before we consume, we may create a more efficient world and help the environment in the process.
On small shifts: a plane leaving the US destined for Europe can end up in a different country with a 1% shift at the beginning. With one small post we may make a small change to accompany it. Then another and then another. What would be beyond cool? If a company heard you and changed! That would inspire me to make more small shifts, wouldn’t it you?
In this experiment, if I’m able to get 100 of my network to post and share, then that will be data that you guys agree. If there’s the data, I’ll start reaching out to more of the influencers and see if there is interest in pushing for more change
